Zonte is a south-facing beach on El Salvador's Pacific coast, and its surf life revolves around a simple formula: healthy southern-hemisphere swell meeting offshore northerly flow. The best surfing window runs from May through September, when the southern Pacific storm track fires up and sends consistent SSW and SW groundswell across the equator. Average swell heights climb to 4-4.5ft (1.3-1.4m) with periods in the 13-14 second range, and a healthy slice of each month pushes into the 5-6.5ft (1.5-2m) and even 6.5-8ft (2-2.5m) categories. This is the heart of the biggest, most powerful surf of the year.
