Marinella seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
The prime window at Marinella runs from October through March, when the northern hemisphere storm track drives a conveyor belt of low pressure across the Atlantic and into the western Mediterranean basin. This is when the majority of W, WNW and NW ground swells arrive with 11-13s periods and average heights in the 1.3-1.8m (4-6ft) range. The key for Marinella is timing: with a beach facing WNW, the best waves form when these swells meet a light E to SSE offshore breeze, grooming the faces and holding the lines open. December, January and February are the standouts, while October and March offer the first and last taste of proper winter surf.
Fair Surf Season (April & September)
April and September are transition months. The ocean still remembers winter in April, with WNW/NW swells mixing 3-4ft (0.9-1.2m) clean waves for the dawn patrol before spring sea breezes add texture. September is the season opener as the first autumn lows form; water temperatures are still warm and you can often score clean, slightly smaller WNW/NW swells in glassy conditions. These months require an eye on the synoptic charts, but they offer the best compromise between wave quality and more forgiving conditions.
Low Surf Season (May - August)
By May, the North Atlantic energy shifts north, the Azores High bulges in, and Marinella drops into its summer lull. Average wave heights hover around 3ft (0.9m) with short 9-10s periods and onshore thermal winds from WSW through NNW dominate the afternoons. This is a longboard and groveler time of year, with occasional workable mornings if an easterly land breeze lines up an NW swell. The spot rarely switches off completely, but the summer months are more about fun in the water than pursuing serious surf quality.
