Yport seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
Yport's north-facing beach comes alive when the North Atlantic storm track switches on. From October through March, the average wave height sits between 1.2m and 1.5m (4-5ft), with average periods in the 8-8.5s range and the strongest chances of offshore S/SW winds. These are the months when low pressure systems tracking across the Atlantic and into the English Channel generate the N, NNW and NW swell that actually hits Yport's beach properly. Still, this is a fickle window; the same storms that produce north swell often drag W/NW winds onshore. You have to hunt for the moments when the wind stabilises from S/SW and the north pulse fills in. The North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is a useful broader signal here; positive NAO phases tend to steer deeper lows toward the British Isles and increase the chance of active surf in the Channel, while negative phases often leave Yport under quiet high pressure. Water temperatures sit near 7-10°C (45-50°F), so thick rubber is part of the deal.
Fair Surf Season (April & September)
April and September are transitional, in-between months. The Atlantic low pressure belt is still semi-active, but average wave heights fall to around 0.9m (3ft) and periods slip to 6.7-7.4s. Northerly and north-northeasterly swell can still appear, especially in April, and September often brings the first fresh autumn pulses. Ideal offshore winds only blow 12-13% of the time, so consistency is lacking, but with clean S/SW winds and a modest N/NW swell, Yport offers fun-sized, rippable waves.
Low Surf Season (May - August)
Summer is the slow season. The Azores High becomes the dominant weather feature, the North Atlantic storm track retreats to the north, and average heights drop to 0.8m (2.5-3ft) with periods of only 6.2-6.8s. Most energy is short-period windswell, and the dominant W/WSW swell direction is poorly aligned with the north-facing beach. Onshore W/NW winds and sea breezes further reduce quality. Still, occasional low pressure troughs or North Sea disturbances can deliver a small but clean window. Summer water temperatures reach 18-19°C (64-66°F), making it the only time of year when a spring suit or even a boardshorts session is possible.
