Tucked into the rugged coastline of Normandy, Yport stands as one of the region’s premier reef breaks, delivering a long, wrapping left that peels over a boulder-strewn bottom. The wave jacks up over a mix of rock and reef, offering a clean, drawn-out ride when the swell lines up, and on bigger days a secondary right can ignite inside the bay, adding a welcome alternative. The consistent northwest to westerly pulse—common along this stretch of the English Channel—feeds the break best, while an incoming tide tends to smooth the face over the shallow rocks. Wind is key: an easterly offshore keeps the walls clean and steep. Though the rocky floor demands respect, the rewards for experienced surfers are a classic, hollow left with real staying power.

Best Surf Season (October - March)

Yport's north-facing beach comes alive when the North Atlantic storm track switches on. From October through March, the average wave height sits between 1.2m and 1.5m (4-5ft), with average periods in the 8-8.5s range and the strongest chances of offshore S/SW winds. These are the months when low pressure systems tracking across the Atlantic and into the English Channel generate the N, NNW and NW swell that actually hits Yport's beach properly. Still, this is a fickle window; the same storms that produce north swell often drag W/NW winds onshore. You have to hunt for the moments when the wind stabilises from S/SW and the north pulse fills in. The North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is a useful broader signal here; positive NAO phases tend to steer deeper lows toward the British Isles and increase the chance of active surf in the Channel, while negative phases often leave Yport under quiet high pressure. Water temperatures sit near 7-10°C (45-50°F), so thick rubber is part of the deal.
