Today's Surf Conditions at Bantham
Spot Overview & Description
Bantham is South Devon’s crown jewel of surf—a steady, sand-bottomed beach break that anchors the mouth of the River Avon. This spot is a swell magnet, consistently drawing in energy and wrapping it around shaped banks that deliver a menu of waves. The standout feature is a reliable, rippable right-hander that peels off near the rivermouth, offering long, lined-up walls for carving. Through the center of the bay, the sand shifts to produce a mix of lefts and rights capable of handling a range of conditions, ensuring that when the swells roll in, there’s nearly always something to ride.
Best Surf Season & Climatology
Best Surf Season (October - March)
The prime time to score Bantham is undoubtedly the autumn and winter months. As the sub-polar low pressure belt strengthens in the North Atlantic, the westerly storm track locks onto the Devon coast, sending a conveyor belt of west-southwest swells directly into Bantham's west-southwest facing beach. Average wave heights in this window sit between 5ft and 7ft (1.5m and 2.1m), with periods often reaching 9 to 10 seconds - enough to stack up punchy, powerful peaks on the exposed bank. A positive North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) spikes this storminess, while blocking highs can quickly turn the wind offshore from the east/northeast. The caveat is wind: cold fronts sweep across the British Isles, dragging southwesterly and westerly gales in their wake, which put a windblown chop on the surface. However, when a transient ridge of high pressure nips in from the Azores and the wind spins offshore, Bantham lights up - clean, hollow 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m) runners. These moments are rarer than we'd like, with ideal offshore flow only 11-15% of the time, but they are the reason locals stock up on thick winter wetsuits and hoods.
