Polzeath's west-northwest exposure lights up when the North Atlantic storm track shifts south and the Icelandic Low deepens through autumn and winter. Negative phases of the NAO often push the jet stream further south, directing a conveyor belt of low-pressure systems at the UK and ensuring a steady supply of powerful groundswell. Average surf heights run 5-7ft (1.5-2.2m) with periods commonly in the powerful 10-12s band, and the dominant west to north-west swell windows are exactly what this stretch of North Cornwall needs. Offshore winds from the east through southeast occur around 23% of the time, often in the wake of passing cold fronts or under slow-moving continental highs, delivering clean, hollow lines across the beach. This is the money window for serious wave riding.
