Best Surf Season & Climatology
Best Surf Season (November - March)
The heart of winter unleashes the full fury of the North Atlantic on Galiote. From November through March, the average swell height hovers around 1.0-1.1m with periods pushing into the 6-second range, providing consistent, rideable waves. The ideal wind percentage peaks at 31-35% during these months, with frequent offshore flows from the SW-WNW quadrant. Strong extratropical cyclones churn the ocean, sending powerful W and WSW swells directly into the east-facing beach. When the NAO index dips negative, the storm track aligns perfectly, delivering long-period groundswell that wraps around the coastline. This is the prime window for solid, punchy surf.
Fair Surf Season (April & October)
As the seasons transition, April and October offer a mixed bag. Average swell heights drop to 0.8-0.9m with periods around 5.5-5.6s, and ideal wind frequency falls to 22-27%. Spring brings lighter winds and more variable conditions, while October sees a resurgence of Atlantic activity but also a higher percentage of onshore E and ENE winds. Still, occasional pulses of W swell can produce fun, rippable waves, especially when a high-pressure system parks over the Bay of Biscay, setting up clean offshore breezes.
Low Surf Season (May - September)
Summer settles in with a frustrating lull. From May to September, average swell heights plummet to a meager 0.5-0.7m and periods shrink to 4.6-5.1s, leaving Galiote often flat or with tiny, choppy waves. The ideal wind percentage drops to 20-23% as the dominant winds switch to NE and E, which are onshore for this east-facing spot. Thermal low-pressure systems and weak high pressure dominate, producing little to no storm activity in the North Atlantic. Swell from the W and WSW is still the primary source of energy, but it arrives with low periods and minimal height. Surfers must rely on rare summer groundswell or settle for groveling sessions on small, weak waves.
