Best Surf Season (December - February)
If you are chasing waves at Loutsa, winter is your window. The North Atlantic storm track and Mediterranean low pressure systems become the main drivers, and although this east-facing Greek beach will never see the open-ocean groundswell of an Atlantic coastline, December, January, and February deliver the largest average surf heights of the year - around 3ft (0.9m) - and the highest percentage of offshore wind. Average swell periods hover just above 5s, often putting the surf in the 'average, punchy and rideable' zone when the wind cooperates. Water temperatures sit at 14-17°C (57-63°F), and the 36-38% frequency of ideal offshore flow gives you the best odds of clean, lined-up waves.
Fair Surf Season (October - November and March - April)
The shoulder months are a tale of two transitions. Autumn sees storm activity ramping back up - November averages 2.4mm of rain per day and 2-3ft (0.6-0.9m) waves with 32% offshore winds - while March and April hold onto winter remnants before the spring sun takes over. Expect inconsistent, smaller surf: occasional punchy 2-3ft (0.6-0.9m) sets, some flat spells, and a slightly better chance for clean conditions when a low-pressure system over the Aegean lines up with the NE/ENE/E/ESE swell window.
Low Surf Season (May - September)
Summer at Loutsa is all about the meltemi. The etesian winds pour down from the north and northeast, producing chop on the water but very little real surf. Average heights drop to 1-2ft (0.3-0.6m), periods shrink to 4s or less, and the frequency of offshore wind plummets to 10-18%. The water warms to a beautiful 25-26°C (77-79°F) and the beach turns into a swimming paradise, but surfers will be groveling on knee-high leftovers. Unless a rare summer storm lines things up, leave the shortboard at home and save your energy for the cooler months.
