Kovalam Beach seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
Kovalam's surf year is dictated by the Indian monsoon rhythm. When the northeast monsoon takes hold from October through March, the west-southwest-facing breaks get a near-perfect recipe: small-to-moderate southern hemisphere swell wrapping into the bay, long-period 9-11s energy, and favourable offshore wind days 20-51% of the time. The waves may only average 2-4ft (0.6-1.2m), but clean surfaces and punchy lines make this the most consistent, enjoyable window of the year.
Fair Surf Season (April & September)
April and September are monsoon transition months. April still delivers average 3ft (0.9m) waves at a powerful 11.5s as the ocean warms to 30.3°C, but onshore northwesterlies increase and ideal wind drops to 17%. September is similar: 4ft (1.3m) of southwest groundswell remains, yet lingering monsoon NW/WNW winds keep ideal conditions at only 4%. These months reward patience - a clean dawn session can be great, but the daily pattern is often bumpy.
Low Surf Season (May - August)
The southwest monsoon from May through August is Kovalam's heaviest and roughest season. Strong SW, WSW and W groundswell pushes average wave heights to 4-6ft (1.2-1.8m) with 11s periods - but the wind blows onshore from the W/NW almost constantly, and ideal wind drops to 1-5%. Expect big, powerful, blown-out surf, stormy conditions, heavy rain and shifting sandbars. Only the most committed surfers will find anything worth riding.
