Best Surf Season (June - September)
The Southwest Monsoon is the engine that drives Mahabalipuram's cleanest surf. As the monsoon trough settles over northern India, strong west-to-southwest flow pours across the subcontinent and funnels offshore at this east-southeast-facing beach. This is the only time of year when ideal offshore wind windows consistently beat out onshore flow. Average wave heights sit in the 3-4ft (0.9-1.2m) range with periods of 8-9s, enough for punchy, rideable surf. The swell direction is mostly S/SSE and not perfectly aligned with the beach, so this is not classic long-period groundswell. But the combination of clean, groomed faces and consistent monsoon swell makes these months the most rippable and user-friendly of the year.
Fair Surf Season (October - November & April - May)
These are transitional shoulder months. In April and May, pre-monsoon heat and atmospheric instability generate more S/SSW windswell, while the first reliable offshore W/SW pulses begin to appear. October and November see the northeast monsoon rebuild E/ENE swell as the wind field becomes variable and messy. Rain and thunderstorm activity increase, and tropical cyclones can briefly light up the Bay of Bengal with larger, more powerful surf. If you can time a westerly wind window, there are fun waves to be had, but consistency and surface quality are far from guaranteed.
Low Surf Season (December - March)
The northeast monsoon locks in from December through March, and surf quality here takes a real hit. Despite direct ENE-E swell often being present - especially in December and January - the wind blows predominantly from NE-E, which is onshore for this stretch of coast. Short-period chop and blown-out faces become the norm. February and March are the weakest months on average, with heights dropping to around 2-3ft (0.6-0.9m). Unless a late-season cyclone sends in something special, patience and ability to read small, textured surf are required during the low season.
