Swells from the southeast are the primary drivers, though east and south pulses can also deliver. The break performs best on low to mid tide, handling swell heights from a modest 1 ft (0.3 m) up to larger days. The waves unfold over a sandy bottom, with sections that bend into hollow right-handers as the swell wraps in. Be aware: the wave often loses size on the way in, so consistent, decent waves are most reliable from June through September. When the wind blows from the west—the preferred direction—the lineup cleans up nicely. On a good day, you’ll find a small crew of surfers in the water, so expect company but not a battle for waves. This break is best suited for intermediate surfers looking to sharpen their skills in a forgiving but fun setting. Best Surf Season (June - September)

The Southwest Monsoon is the engine that drives Mahabalipuram's cleanest surf. As the monsoon trough settles over northern India, strong west-to-southwest flow pours across the subcontinent and funnels offshore at this east-southeast-facing beach. This is the only time of year when ideal offshore wind windows consistently beat out onshore flow. Average wave heights sit in the 3-4ft (0.9-1.2m) range with periods of 8-9s, enough for punchy, rideable surf. The swell direction is mostly S/SSE and not perfectly aligned with the beach, so this is not classic long-period groundswell. But the combination of clean, groomed faces and consistent monsoon swell makes these months the most rippable and user-friendly of the year.
