Tucked along the shores of Tamil Nadu, Tiruchendur may be best known for its ancient temple, but this coastal town also offers a quiet surf escape for those in the know. Just a short stroll from the temple grounds, the break serves up a blend of reef and beach options, with waves peeling left and right over a mix of boulders and sand. It’s far from crowded, so you’ll often have the lineup mostly to yourself—a rare luxury in India’s surf scene. The spot comes alive with south to southwest swell, handling waves around 2 feet (0.6 meters) best. Consistency can be a challenge, so check the charts before making the trip. When the conditions align, expect playful, mellow lines ideal for intermediate surfers looking to refine their craft. A northwest wind is your friend here, grooming the faces nicely. The wide tidal range doesn’t limit you—low, mid, or high tide all offer rideable waves, though each changes the character of the break. It’s not a powerhouse, but when Tiruchendur delivers, you’ll find a fun, cultural-infused session that’s as much about the vibe as the ride.

Best Surf Season (November - March)

Tiruchendur is a fickle, monsoon-driven stretch of southeast-facing coastline, and the winter half of the year offers the most rideable windows. As the southwest monsoon retreats, the northeast monsoon takes over and the dominant swell direction swings back into the E/ESE/SE/SSE quadrant. Wave heights hover around 2-4ft (0.6-1.2m) with occasional bigger pulses, and periods improve from the short, choppy 8-second range in December toward the 10-11-second range by March. Winds are far from perfect - the NE monsoon howls out of the NNE/NE/ENE - but the chance of lighter land breezes from the W/NW quadrants increases, especially during October and November. This is the best shot at clean, semi-rippable surf.
