Tiruchendur seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (November - March)
Tiruchendur is a fickle, monsoon-driven stretch of southeast-facing coastline, and the winter half of the year offers the most rideable windows. As the southwest monsoon retreats, the northeast monsoon takes over and the dominant swell direction swings back into the E/ESE/SE/SSE quadrant. Wave heights hover around 2-4ft (0.6-1.2m) with occasional bigger pulses, and periods improve from the short, choppy 8-second range in December toward the 10-11-second range by March. Winds are far from perfect - the NE monsoon howls out of the NNE/NE/ENE - but the chance of lighter land breezes from the W/NW quadrants increases, especially during October and November. This is the best shot at clean, semi-rippable surf.
Fair Surf Season (April & October)
These transition months sit between the two monsoons. April sees the swell window slip sharply to the S/SSW/SSE, with long 12-second periods but a poor wind regime out of the SW/SSW. October marks the return of SSE/SE swell as the northeast monsoon begins, and the wind is ideal 35 percent of the time - the highest of the year. Both months can deliver groomed, long-period waves, but they require patience and a keen eye on the conditions.
Low Surf Season (May - September)
From May through September, the southwest monsoon locks in a steady diet of SSW/S swell and strong SW/WSW winds. While wave heights are often in the fun 3-4ft (0.9-1.2m) range and periods are long, the direction is poor for this SE-facing beach and the winds are overwhelmingly onshore/cross-shore. These months are characterized by bumpy, lumpy, often messy surf, with only the occasional W-wind morning offering a brief, clean window before the sea breeze kicks in.
