Bingin seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (September - November)
Bingin lies on the Bukit Peninsula with a northwest-facing reef that lines up best when the swell combines with clean, offshore wind. The raw data tells us the Indian Ocean has a strong bias toward SSW and SW swell, and even though the spot's textbook ideal direction is N to NW, the long-period south energy finds its way around the headland. The magic occurs when the monsoon winds are in retreat, and from September through November the ideal wind windows peak at 76-88%. With average swells running 5.9ft (1.8m) to 6.6ft (2.0m) and periods of 13.2 to 14.3 seconds, the reef produces its most rhythmic, hollow waves. October is the standout, with an 88% ideal wind rate and an 83.1% concentration of SSW swell.
Fair Surf Season (April - August)
As the dry season develops, the southeast trades blow strong and consistent, and the southern Indian Ocean sends a stream of powerful groundswell. Average wave heights push into the 5.6ft (1.7m) to 7.2ft (2.2m) range, with periods of 13.8 to 14.4 seconds. However, the wind field is dominated by ESE and SE directions, which are not the prescribed offshore for Bingin. This creates a split personality: glassy morning sessions and wind-affected afternoons. April and May offer the cleanest conditions, while July and August hold the biggest swell but suffer from more trade-wind texture.
Low Surf Season (December - February)
The northwest monsoon brings the wet season, and Bingin takes the brunt. The wind roses reveal a strong W and WNW component, which is direct onshore for the bay, and the ideal wind percentage collapses to just 19-33%. The swell is still present at 5.2-5.6ft (1.6-1.7m), but the period shortens to 12.4-12.7s and the mixing of SSW and SW directions makes the energy less organized. Combined with frequent rain and high humidity, this is the least appealing time for meaningful surf at Bingin.
