Hyatt Reef seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (December - March)

The northwest monsoon sets up clean, groomed conditions at Hyatt Reef from December through March, with the most offshore wind reliability arriving in January and February. During this window, the Indian Ocean and Southern Ocean storm tracks keep a steady diet of SSW and SW groundswell pulsing into the reef at 12-13 second intervals. Average surf heights hover around 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m), with enough larger sets in the 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m) range to keep things interesting. Combined with 48-63% ideal wind frequencies, this is the time to plan a trip.

Fair Surf Season (April & November)

These shoulder months are the transition zones between the northwest monsoon and the southeast trades. April still sees long-period 13-14s swell from the S/SSW/SW quadrant and a slightly larger average height, but the wind shifts to ESE/SE in the afternoons, dropping ideal wind to around 19%. November is the reverse: the SE trades begin to fade, ideal wind climbs to 29%, and the reef starts cleaning up as the wet season returns. Look for dawn patrol sessions and offshore pulses to score.

Low Surf Season (May - October)

From May through October the southeast trades lock in across the region, and although the Southern Ocean drives the biggest and longest-period south/southwest swell of the year-averaging 1.8-2.2m (6-7ft) at 14s-the wind direction is predominantly onshore at this southeast-facing reef. Ideal wind percentages crash to 0-3% for most of that stretch, with only October offering a modest 11% and a real early-morning chance. The surf is often powerful but lumpy, windblown, and hard to read, making these the low-quality months for Hyatt Reef.
