This spot rewards those willing to make a short boat trip to the outer barrier reef, where the real action unfolds. A mixed bag of waves draws in surfers seeking quality rides, though conditions can swing dramatically. The wave is a right-hand reef break that peels over live coral, best groomed by south or southwest swells in the 3- to 8-foot range (1 to 2.5 meters). It works across all tides—low, mid, and high—but gets notably hollow on bigger days, particularly when a northwest wind cleans things up. This is expert territory: currents run strong, paddling demands serious endurance, and the reef underneath is unforgiving. Two distinct sections are separated by a noticeable gap in the reef. The outside wave can be unruly, with awkward, rip-torn peaks that test your positioning and timing. Move inside, and the wave transforms into a more dependable tube, sucking over shallower coral for guaranteed barrel time. The northwest monsoon sets up clean, groomed conditions at Hyatt Reef from December through March, with the most offshore wind reliability arriving in January and February. During this window, the Indian Ocean and Southern Ocean storm tracks keep a steady diet of SSW and SW groundswell pulsing into the reef at 12-13 second intervals. Average surf heights hover around 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m), with enough larger sets in the 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m) range to keep things interesting. Combined with 48-63% ideal wind frequencies, this is the time to plan a trip.
