Best Surf Season (April - October)
Kuta Beach sits on the west-southwest coast of Bali, holding an open outlook toward the Indian Ocean and the long-period groundswell that the Southern Ocean storm track sends northward. The surf year is ruled by the monsoon flip: when the northwest monsoon ramps up in December, W and WSW winds blow straight onshore and wreak havoc on the lineup. When the southeast trades return in April, the same beach grooms into clean, organized lines. The best season runs from April through October. During this window, SSW and SW swells dominate while E, ESE and SE winds provide offshore or cross-offshore flow. April, May, September and October offer the highest ideal-wind percentages of 68-75%, while June through August bring the biggest swells of the year with average heights reaching 7-8ft (2.2m) and intervals peaking at 14.4s. Water temperatures stay warm at 26.7-29.1°C, and rainfall is at a dry-season minimum - a recipe for consistently surfable waves.
Fair Surf Season (March & November)
March and November are transitional months caught between the two monsoon regimes. The swell always seems to show up - SSW and SW directions typically combine for more than 80% of the wave energy - but the wind field is a split personality. Offshore E/ESE flows battle with onshore W/WSW pulses, dropping the ideal wind percentage into the 45-56% range. On the clean days, Kuta can still reel off punchy, long-period waves, but expect lumpy afternoons and fewer all-day sessions as the trade wind direction wavers.
Low Surf Season (December - February)
December, January and February form the low season for wave quality. The northwest monsoon locks in W and WNW winds, which are the absolute worst directions for a west-southwest-facing beach. Combined W/WSW/WNW winds blow roughly 50-70% of the time, and ideal offshore winds only grace the coast 17-23% of the time. To make matters worse, this is also the wettest period, with rainfall around 8-10mm/day. The swell itself remains substantial - SSW/SW swells regularly push into the 5-8ft (1.5-2.5m) range - but the onshore wind turns it into a blown-out, messy beast. The few good sessions come from early-morning land breezes or an east-northeast offshore event between storm systems.
