Medewi seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (January - April)

The Medewi swell machine gets its cleanest expression between January and April. This is the back half of the northwest monsoon, when the Indian Ocean storm track is active and plenty of SSW/SW groundswell lines are aimed directly at this south-southwest-facing boulder point. Ideal offshore wind percentages run at 30-39 percent, the highest of the entire year, and average swell heights sit at a very manageable 3-4ft (1.0-1.1m) with long-period energy between 12.2 and 13.5 seconds. That combination keeps the long left fun, rippable and relatively clean, especially in the morning when land breezes align with the offshore N/NE quadrant.

Fair Surf Season (May, October - December)

The transitional shoulder months offer good waves with more weather. May sees swell size and period start to climb, but the SE trades begin to strengthen. October through December marks the slow return of the wet season, with rain and fluctuating winds. During these months you can score fun 2-5ft (0.6-1.5m) SSW/SW swell at Medewi, but the window of truly clean conditions is narrower and often limited to dawn patrol sessions before the sea breeze or monsoon wind kicks up.

Low Surf Season (June - September)

Do not confuse low quality with low size. June through September is the biggest, longest-period swell window of the year at Medewi, with averages peaking around 4ft (1.3m) and periods touching 14 seconds. The problem is the southeast trade wind regime, driven by strong winter highs over Australia. Ideal wind percentages drop to just 11-25 percent as ESE/SE flow becomes dominant, putting cross-shore chop and bump on the faces of an otherwise excellent SSW/S left-hander. You need a good weather pattern, light morning winds, or an unusual N/NE offshore flow to unlock the peak of the dry season.
