Thunders is a cobalt-blue gem of a reef break, offering a consistent and powerful left-hander that peels across a stunning beachfront. Framed by a picturesque coastline with easy access and a welcoming, mellow vibe, this spot is as much about the scenery as it is about the surf. With the ability to handle all tides, it’s a versatile option for surfers who want to score no matter the clock. The waves here pack a punch—thick, bowly peaks that unload on a shallow reef, demanding respect and a solid intermediate skillset. Swell sizes start around 3 feet and can double up on a good day, with the primary energy coming from the south, though west swells can also sneak in. The long, drawn-out drop calls for a bigger board, especially when the waves start draining and offering up speed barrels or hollow inside sections. When the swell is pumping, the intensity ramps up, particularly under a southeast wind. Beware: getting caught inside means a brutal beating in heavy whitewash. Thunders is a fallback hero on smaller days, often holding swell when neighboring spots are flat. The lineup can handle a crowd thanks to its size and shifting takeoff zones, but the reef’s nuances mean not everyone will dial in the rhythm. Best Surf Season (May - September)

Thunders is a classic Indonesian west-southwest-facing reef setup, exposed to the full force of the Southern Ocean and Indian Ocean swell machine. The months from May through September deliver the most consistent combination of groundswell and clean wind. During this window, the average swell height climbs from 1.5m (4.9ft) to 1.7m (5.6ft) while the average period sits at a powerful 13.9-14.3s. The seasonal shift to the southeast trades dries out the atmosphere and, more importantly, keeps the northwest monsoon winds at bay. This allows the SSW and S swells, which are dead on the exposure, to break with real shape on Thunders' west-facing reefs.

July and August are the standout months: long-period S/SSW pulses hit at 1.5-2m (5-6.5ft) as standard, and a meaningful share of days push into the overhead 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m) range. With water temperatures around 29-30°C and air temps near 28°C, it is tropical perfection. Expect offshore/cross-offshore morning winds, glassy surface, and pumping, reeling lines.
