This iconic right-hander unloads over a sharp, live-coral platform, offering thrilling, high-performance waves that are as beautiful as they are unforgiving. This is not a spot for the faint of heart; it demands advanced skills, sharp reflexes, and a healthy respect for the ocean’s power. The wave itself is a fast, hollow right that barrels and walls up depending on the swell direction. Optimal conditions come from a solid SouthWest swell, though it also handles due south swells with ease. Look for swell sizes in the 6- to 8-foot range (1.8–2.4 meters), with mid to high tide producing the cleanest, most organized lines. Light westerly winds are key—they groom the wave face into a smooth, glassy canvas that lets you carve and barrel with precision. Expect company. Lance’s Right is a magnet for traveling surfers, and the lineup can get crowded. Navigating the pack requires confidence and etiquette; you'll need to be dialed in on your takeoff and ready for heavy drops over shallow coral. The safest approach is to paddle out via the deeper channel, staying clear of the reef on entry and exit. A fall can mean a close encounter with sharp coral, so be prepared for long duck dives and a high-intensity session. In short, this spot rewards commitment, skill, and patience—and when the stars align, it serves up some of the most memorable rights in the archipelago.

Best Surf Season (December - April)

The northwest monsoon is the key to Lances Right. From December through April, the prevailing wind shifts into the west-to-northwest quadrant, giving this east-northeast-facing reef a high percentage of clean, offshore/cross-offshore sessions. Average surf heights hover around 2-3ft (0.6-1m), wave periods climb from 10s to 12.7s, and the ideal-wind probability sits between 60 and 65 percent. You won't see XXL surf here, but the mix of consistent south-to-west groundswell and groomed surfaces makes this the most reliable window for fun, rippable waves at Lances Right.
