Best Surf Season (December - April)
The northwest monsoon is the key to Lances Right. From December through April, the prevailing wind shifts into the west-to-northwest quadrant, giving this east-northeast-facing reef a high percentage of clean, offshore/cross-offshore sessions. Average surf heights hover around 2-3ft (0.6-1m), wave periods climb from 10s to 12.7s, and the ideal-wind probability sits between 60 and 65 percent. You won't see XXL surf here, but the mix of consistent south-to-west groundswell and groomed surfaces makes this the most reliable window for fun, rippable waves at Lances Right.
Fair Surf Season (May & November)
May and November are transition months caught between the northwest and southeast monsoons. The Indian Ocean storm track is still firing, and the average wave period lengthens to 13.4s in May, meaning real groundswell energy pulses through the reef. However, the wind quality becomes more of a gamble: May sees the SE trades beginning to infiltrate the region, while November is recovering from them. Ideal-wind percentages fall to 43-52 percent, and the windows of clean surf tend to be shorter-usually early morning before the trade breeze builds or during breaks in the monsoon flow.
Low Surf Season (June - October)
From June through October, Lances Right experiences its toughest surf-quality conditions. This is not because the swell disappears; in fact, average swell heights increase slightly to around 3ft (1m) and periods peak at 13-14s, reflecting powerful Southern Ocean groundswell. The problem is the southeast monsoon. Southeast through east-southeast winds dominate 30-50 percent of the time, turning the reef into a raked, lumpy mess and reducing ideal-wind odds to just 23-39 percent. The energy is there, but you have to pick your moments carefully-typically dawn patrol and between trade-wind pulses-to find anything truly good.
