Tucked northeast of the Peak in Bundoran Bay, 3D’s is a spring high-tide reef break that delivers instant, adrenaline-fueled action over a barely submerged rock shelf. This spot is a magnet for bodyboarders and expert surfers chasing hollow, barreling waves, but its shallow, jagged bottom demands constant respect and razor-sharp awareness. Best on a northwest swell, 3D’s handles waves from 5 to 12 feet (1.5–3.6m). The lefts offer longer, more drawn-out rides with punchy hollow sections, while the rights are compact, bowling tubes that pitch fast. Southeast winds are your ally here, cleaning up the faces and sharpening the lips. High tide is non-negotiable—particularly when the swell is cranking—as lower water levels expose the reef’s teeth. This is expert territory. Steep paddles, shifting currents, and a tight takeoff zone test even the most seasoned surfers. Access is straightforward: walk across the reef from town, or when the swell’s big, paddle across the bay from the harbor. Be ready for a long, choppy paddle back—especially when conditions are large. Expect a crowd. 3D’s is one of Ireland’s most iconic waves, drawing a pack of local chargers and traveling rippers. Best Surf Season (October - March)

Bundoran's West-Northwest exposure sits squarely in the crosshairs of the North Atlantic storm track, and from October through March this stretch of Irish coastline consistently sees the largest, most powerful surf of the year. Average swell heights climb to 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) with periods from 11-13s, and the dominant W-WNW-NW groundswell direction aligns almost perfectly with the beach's open corner. When mid-latitude cyclones deepen south of Iceland and the NAO tilts positive, Bundoran reaps the rewards: long-period WNW swell wrapping in with 10-14s intervals, producing clean, rippable walls and the occasional pumping, firing day in the 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m) range. Although the westerly wind sector is also the most common onshore wind, high-pressure ridges to the east deliver enough offshore easterly/southeasterly windows to make this the most consistent period for quality surf.
