Andora seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (December - March)
While Andora will never be confused with a North Atlantic slab, the best chances for clean, surfable waves fall in the heart of winter, roughly December through March. The Ligurian Sea comes alive as low-pressure systems track through the Gulf of Genoa and pump SSW and SW swell toward this SSE-facing beach. Crucially, these winter months also deliver the most reliable offshore wind flow: north and NNW winds, including strong episodes of the classic Mediterranean offshore pulse, blow straight off the land and groom the short-period swell. Average wave heights hover around 2ft (0.6m) with periods still short - 5.4 to 5.7s - so this is a beach that relies on clean, windless texture rather than raw power. January and December offer the highest percentage of ideal surfing conditions at 17 percent, making them the standout windows in an otherwise fickle surf year. The North Atlantic Oscillation matters here too: when the NAO turns negative, the upper-level storm track often dips south and re-energizes Mediterranean cyclogenesis, giving Andora its best swell-producing windows. Conversely, strongly positive NAO phases tend to keep the Atlantic storm train to the north and leave the Ligurian Sea under high pressure and flat.
Fair Surf Season (October - November, April)
The shoulder seasons get the ball rolling and are worth watching when an autumn or spring storm sets up over the western Mediterranean. October and November represent the ramp-up period: the sea surface remains warm, rainfall increases dramatically - November averages over 4mm per day - and the first real SSW/SW swells of fall can push through with occasional 3-5ft (1-1.5m) waves. Wind is the wildcard, with frequent NNW offshore pulses but also longer periods of southerly onshore flow around low pressure. April is the spring mirror-image: the same SSW/SW and SE/S swell sources appear, but lighter winds and a growing sea breeze reduce the number of clean surfing windows. These fair months can surprise on a bigger northwest Mediterranean storm, but consistency is lower than midwinter.
Low Surf Season (May - September)
From late spring through summer, Andora drops into its summer doldrums. High pressure settles over the Mediterranean, the thermal sea breeze kicks in almost daily from the south, and average swell heights fall to around 1-2ft (0.3-0.6m) with periods under 5s. The swell charts become dominated by vast stretches of micro SSW/SW windswell and local sea breeze bumps, with the percentage of ideal surfing conditions dropping to 6-9 percent. Water temperatures climb to 23-24°C by late summer, which makes it lovely for swimming, but surfers should come prepared for long flat spells. A late-summer southern Mediterranean disturbance can occasionally throw a pulse at Andora, but the default is flat.
