Best Surf Season (October - March)
For a stretch of sand on the western Ligurian Riviera, Arma di Taggia is at its best during the cold half of the year. From October through March, the Mediterranean storm track switches back on: low-pressure systems spin up in the Gulf of Genoa and the northern Tyrrhenian Sea, sending S, SSE, SE and ESE swell - the key directions for this SSE-facing break - across a compact but active fetch. Average wave heights climb to 0.6m (2ft), periods reach 5.5-5.7s, and the chance of an offshore N, NW or NNW breeze is at its seasonal peak, especially in December and January when ideal wind blows 15% of the time. These statistics may not look like much from an ocean standpoint, but in this contained sea they represent the most rideable combination. The trick is to read the pressure map in your favour: as a Genoa low approaches, light south-east swell builds, and if a cold Mistral or Tramontane-type NW wind clears the coast afterwards, clean, fun-sized 1-1.5m (3-5ft) peaks are possible. Don't expect long-period groundswell; the dominant swell period stays in windswell territory, so look for fresh local fetch rather than distant storms.
Fair Surf Season (April, May & September)
The shoulder months of April, May and September form a transitional window. The sea is still full of enough thermal and frontal energy to occasionally fire up an S/SE pulse, but the average period drops to 4.5-5.3s and average height falls to 0.4-0.5m (1.3-1.6ft). The percentage of clean offshore wind shrinks to 7-10%, while S/SE onshore winds become more common - a bad deal for wave quality at Arma. May in particular starts to feel like summer, with the wave rose dominated by small SSW/SW seas and the average period falling below 5s. That said, a strong late-season Mediterranean low can still produce a fun, rippable day on a good NW wind window.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is flat. June through August averages 0.3-0.4m (1-1.3ft) with periods as low as 4.1-4.4s. The Mediterranean high-pressure ridge and thermal sea-breeze regime dominate, producing mostly SSW/SW windswell and sea-breeze chop. Ideal offshore wind percentages drop to just 5% each month, so glassy conditions are rare. Water temperatures are beautiful - up to 23.8°C in August - but boards will mostly stay in the car unless a rare low-pressure system drifts across the Tyrrhenian. Summer is best avoided for quality surf at Arma di Taggia.
