Best Surf Season (October - March)

For a stretch of sand on the western Ligurian Riviera, Arma di Taggia is at its best during the cold half of the year. From October through March, the Mediterranean storm track switches back on: low-pressure systems spin up in the Gulf of Genoa and the northern Tyrrhenian Sea, sending S, SSE, SE and ESE swell - the key directions for this SSE-facing break - across a compact but active fetch. Average wave heights climb to 0.6m (2ft), periods reach 5.5-5.7s, and the chance of an offshore N, NW or NNW breeze is at its seasonal peak, especially in December and January when ideal wind blows 15% of the time. These statistics may not look like much from an ocean standpoint, but in this contained sea they represent the most rideable combination. The trick is to read the pressure map in your favour: as a Genoa low approaches, light south-east swell builds, and if a cold Mistral or Tramontane-type NW wind clears the coast afterwards, clean, fun-sized 1-1.5m (3-5ft) peaks are possible. Don't expect long-period groundswell; the dominant swell period stays in windswell territory, so look for fresh local fetch rather than distant storms.
