Entella seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (November - February)
Entella's most reliable surf comes with the cold season. When the North Atlantic Oscillation dips negative and cold continental air pours over the Alps, the Gulf of Genoa becomes a factory for lee cyclones. These lows push S/SW/WSW swell into the Ligurian Sea while a northeasterly NNE/NE offshore flow cleans the surface. Average wave heights climb to 0.8-0.9m (2-3ft), periods push to 5.7-5.9s, and the ideal wind window reaches 18 percent. Those numbers are modest by Atlantic standards, but for this SSW-facing Mediterranean beach they deliver genuinely fun, punchy waves. Rarely does true 10s+ groundswell arrive; the magic lies in combining a short-fetch S/SW windswell with a clean offshore breeze.
Fair Surf Season (March - April, October)
Spring and early autumn are transitional. March and April still see plenty of SW swell, with the southwesterly window dominating the wave rose, but average heights ease to 0.7m (2-3ft), periods sit around 5.6-5.7s, and the offshore wind reliability slowly erodes as the Mediterranean begins to stabilise. October brings the welcome return of stronger cyclogenesis and the first serious S/SW pulses, but the period tends to lag around 5.2s and the directional spread is more mixed, making for less consistent quality than the core winter months.
Low Surf Season (May - September)
Summer is a flat-season test of patience. High pressure over the Mediterranean suppresses storm activity, average swell heights drop to 0.4-0.5m (1.5-2ft), and average periods sink to 4.6-4.9s, placing the wave field squarely in choppy, low and messy territory. The directional spectrum is dominated by SW/WSW, but almost all of that energy is locally generated windsea rather than surfable swell. Thermal sea breezes from ESE/SE/SSE add cross/onshore chop, and the ideal wind window bottoms out at 9-13 percent. This is the time for longboarding, foiling, or a pilgrimage to bigger waves.
