Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (October - March)

Kitaizumi faces due east, so its magic formula is simple: swell from NE, ENE, E or ESE plus offshore wind from SW through WNW. The North Pacific delivers exactly that during the colder months. From October through March, the Aleutian Low pumps out low-pressure systems and cold fronts, sending consistent 3-4ft (1-1.2m) swell with average periods around 9-10s to this stretch of the Japanese coast. Occasional stronger storms produce 5-8ft (1.5-2.5m) sets in the E/ENE window. At the same time, NW and WNW winds blow offshore more often, keeping the waves clean for 38-48 percent of the time. Water temperatures drop to 8-16°C, so this is the season for thick rubber and the best chance of lined-up, punchy waves.
