Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Pacific roars to life as autumn gives way to the Siberian High, and Kugenuma settles into its most consistent surf window of the year. High pressure over the Asian continent sets up a strong offshore pressure gradient across Sagami Bay, firing N/NNE/NE/NNW winds directly offshore at this SSW-facing beach. At the same time, low-pressure systems tracking south of Japan and across the western North Pacific inject S/SSW/SW swell into the bay. December and January show the classic winter formula: SW swell dominates with 27-29% of the wave distribution, while the wind rose is anchored by NNE, NE and N. The average height is modest - mostly 2-3ft (0.6-0.9m) - but the period in the 7.8-8.7s range keeps the waves punchy and rideable. October stands out as the most reliable month with 20% ideal wind, and March follows closely as spring begins to mix in more S/SSW energy. This is the season to plan around: clean mornings, consistent southern swell, and far fewer blown-out days.
