Average wave heights range from 1.6m to 1.8m, with periods frequently exceeding 12 seconds, delivering pumping, heavy surf that can reach up to 2.5m or more. The wind is offshore (from W, WSW, SW, or SSW) around 41-49% of the time, often accompanying clean conditions under clearing skies as high-pressure builds behind cold fronts. This is the prime window for head-high-plus waves with steep, hollow faces, especially when the Azores High interacts with deep lows to create a favorable pressure gradient. Expect epic sessions with long, powerful lines wrapping into the bay.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)

As the seasons transition, the North Atlantic storm track begins to weaken or intensify, leading to more inconsistent swell with average heights dropping to 1.0-1.2m and periods settling around 10-11 seconds. April and September can still see occasional strong low-pressure systems, but the dominant swell direction shifts slightly more northwesterly, still hitting the spot well. Offshore wind odds fall to 23-29%, meaning more frequent onshore breezes from the NW or W that can chop up otherwise nice waves. When a crisp offshore breeze aligns with a solid NW fetch, you can score fun, rippable waves in the 1-1.5m range, ideal for shortboard or hybrid sessions. These months are best for the patient surfer willing to check the forecast for windows of clean conditions.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer brings a dramatic lull in surf energy as the jet stream retreats north and the Atlantic high-pressure belt dominates. Average wave heights hover around 0.9-1.0m with periods dropping to 9.0-9.4s, resulting in choppy, weak, and often messy conditions. The predominant swell comes from the NW (over 65% of total) but with insufficient size and period to generate punch. Offshore wind odds bottom out at 16-19%, with sea breezes and onshore flows from the W and NW frequently rising by midday. Most days see glassy but tiny leftovers suitable only for longboards or foils. The rare pulse of longer-period swell from a distant hurricane or strong low can provide brief sparks of fun, but consistency is low. This is the true off-season for serious wave riding at Les Sables d'Or.
