Best Surf Season (May - September)
The Indian Ocean monsoon engine drives everything at Isdhoo. When the southwest monsoon becomes established, it pushes the trade winds from the southern quadrants, creating the cleanest offshore flow for this north-facing beach. May through September delivers the highest percentage of ideal wind - between 39% and 54% - and average swell heights climb to 4ft (1.2-1.3m). Wave periods sit in the 6.6-7.3s range, meaning a punchy, rideable, short-period windswell rather than an epic long-period groundswell. True north-directed swell is rare, but the relentless southern monsoon windswell, combined with offshore winds, provides the most consistent surf of the year. This is the season to plan a trip, with June, July and August leading the charge.
Fair Surf Season (April and October)
April and October represent the transition months between monsoons. In April, ideal wind peaks at 42% and the ocean turns clean as the wind shifts from the north-east to the south-west, but the average swell is smaller at 3ft (1.0m). October offers a little more size - 4ft (1.2m) - with a 32% ideal-wind score, but the surface becomes less consistent as the trades begin to switch. If you are chasing clean but underpowered waves, April is your month; if you want more energy and don't mind wind variability, October works.
Low Surf Season (November - March)
November begins the slide back to the northeast monsoon. Ideal wind drops to 24%, and by December through March it sinks as low as 5-20%. The northeastern trades blow onshore at Isdhoo, chopping up the wave face, while average swell drops to 3-4ft (0.9-1.1m) with periods of only 6.2-6.7s. The east/northeast swell that does arrive is mostly short-period windswell and seldom sees clean offshore wind. December and March are slightly better than January and February, but overall this is a low period of onshore slop and small surf.
