Near the breakwater, a right-hand point break peels off with consistency, while the middle section offers a forgiving right-and-left peak that caters to all comers. Toward the southern end, a right-hand sandbank and a left point break come into play, with wave heights generally building as you move south away from the shelter. The seafloor is predominantly sand, though occasional rocks lurk near the southern end—so keep an eye out during lower tides. A word of caution: Matosinhos carries a reputation for heavy pollution due to its close proximity to the harbour and rivermouth, making post-session hygiene a priority. Despite this, its easy access and variety of peaks keep it a staple for local surfers.

The wind machine plays along beautifully: offshore flow from the N, NNE, NE, and ENE quadrants blows a solid 45-48% of the time, grooming the faces into smooth, rippable walls. The swell mix is overwhelmingly dominated by low-energy NW and WNW groundswells, often mixing with short-period windswell. The wind pattern is trickier: while the percentage of ideal offshore winds (N, NNE, NE or ENE) ranges from 38-43%, the wind frequently swings around to the SSW, SW, or W, blowing direct onshore and chopping up what little swell exists. The strong sea breeze cycle also kicks in, with afternoon westerlies often turning the surf into a messy, bumpy affair.
