Nestled along Mexico’s southwestern coast, Barra de Potosí is a quiet, sheltering beach that rarely sees the full force of the open ocean. Southern swells largely bypass this protected nook, but once or twice a year, a proper pulse can spin up a legitimate left-hander peeling down the point—a fleeting, magic moment that makes the wait worthwhile. Outside those rare gems, the rivermouth offers a few peaks and a right point break, though neither will set your world on fire. The vibe here is unabashedly laid-back, attracting surfers who prioritize a mellow atmosphere over epic, everyday performance. Optimal conditions arrive with southwest swell, handling wave heights around 2 feet (0.6 m), with occasional contributions from south and northwest angles. The wave breaks over an uneven reef, producing a left-running point wave. For the cleanest shape, you’ll want southeast winds, and the break works across low, mid, and high tides. Make no mistake—this spot is better suited for expert surfers, who can navigate the shifting reef and fickle energy. While Barra de Potosí won’t make any highlight reels, its unique charm lies in those quiet, perfectly aligned moments when the ocean delivers just enough for a truly relaxed ride.

Best Surf Season (June - October)

From late spring through early autumn, the southern hemisphere storm track becomes the main engine for Barra de Potosi. A steady diet of long-period SSW and SW groundswell, averaging 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) at 13-14 seconds, arrives across the Pacific and puts this WNW-facing stretch into play. This is also the window with the most reliable clean wind, with ideal surf conditions running 40-48% of the time from June through October. Expect the best sessions in the early morning before the afternoon sea breeze and the North American Monsoon take over. While this is the wettest time of year, the combination of powerful, consistent swell and better wind windows makes it the standout season.
