Escolleras

Escolleras, set along the sweeping stretch of Playa del Palmar, draws surfers and bodyboarders alike to its unique blend of marina-influenced currents and sand-and-reef contours. When conditions align, those currents can groom a wedgey, sucky take-off that occasionally unloads into a tubular right—a rare treat on this coast. The wave is predominantly a right-hander, breaking over a mixed bottom of sand and reef, and comes alive with west swell, though south and southwest pulses also register. It starts handling waves from the 2-foot range and works at all tides, low through high, making it a flexible option throughout the day. The preferred wind is northeast, keeping the faces clean and steep. This spot is best suited for intermediate surfers who appreciate a punchy, steep drop and the potential for a brief barrel. Expect company, especially from a dedicated crew of bodyboarders who gravitate to Escolleras for its wedging sections. If the lineup feels too packed, a short walk down the beach reveals more isolated peaks with similar characteristics—far from the main crowd, but still sharing the same underlying swell.

Best Surf Season (December - March)

Escolleras is a south-facing set-up that cleans up best when the North Pacific high builds over the region and pushes offshore N/NNE/NE winds across the coastline. From December through March, ideal wind frequencies reach 52-62%, the dry season is in full swing, and long-period S/SW/SSW groundswell rolls in consistently. Wave heights average around 3-4ft (1.0-1.2m) with periods near 13-14 seconds, so most days offer clean, lined-up, fun-to-solid surf without too much size. Water temps hover around 28°C and rain is minimal, making this the most reliable window for groomed waves.
