La Jolla seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (March - May)
The most consistent surf window at La Jolla falls in the spring, when the atmosphere transitions away from winter and the percentage of ideal wind climbs to its highest mark of the year. Average periods climb from 12.6s in March to 14.1s in May, and the ideal wind statistic reaches 64-65 percent in April and May. Swell heights hover around 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m), with a strong S/SSW component that can wrap into the east-facing beach. The long periods and lighter, more offshore-oriented SW-WNW breezes make this the closest thing to a reliable, groomed season.
Fair Surf Season (June - October)
Summer and early autumn bring warm, tropical water temperatures and a steady diet of long-period S/SSW groundswell, but the quality is more inconsistent. The ideal wind window drops to 43-57 percent, and precipitation increases sharply from June through September as tropical moisture and thunderstorms invade the region. Wave heights remain in the 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) range, with occasional bigger pulses, yet the prevailing winds become lighter and more variable, so the surf frequently turns soft or lumpy after the morning hours. October offers a transition back toward more structured swell but wind quality declines.
Low Surf Season (November - February)
The heart of winter is the most challenging period for La Jolla. Average wave periods drop to 10.1-11.5s, and the ideal wind percentage falls to 36-46 percent. N and NNE winds become more frequent and stronger, chopping up what would otherwise be punchy 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) surf. While the northern hemisphere swells are more energetic from the NNE/NE quadrant, they arrive with shorter periods and less favorable wind alignment. For surfers here, it is a season of smaller, wind-affected waves with occasional clean windows rather than sustained quality.
