The most consistent surf window at La Jolla falls in the spring, when the atmosphere transitions away from winter and the percentage of ideal wind climbs to its highest mark of the year. Average periods climb from 12.6s in March to 14.1s in May, and the ideal wind statistic reaches 64-65 percent in April and May. Swell heights hover around 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m), with a strong S/SSW component that can wrap into the east-facing beach. The long periods and lighter, more offshore-oriented SW-WNW breezes make this the closest thing to a reliable, groomed season.
