Today's Surf Conditions at La Bocana
Spot Overview & Description
Nestled roughly 30 minutes east of the Huatulco tourist corridor, La Bocana offers a convenient and accessible beach break that caters to a wide spectrum of ability levels. The wave quality here is heavily dependent on the alignment of swell and tide, with shifting sandbanks adding a layer of unpredictability that keeps things interesting. When conditions align, you'll find fun, rippable peaks peeling both left and right over a sandy bottom. The spot is most reliable with a south swell, though southeast and southwest pulses can also produce rideable waves. A minimum of 2 feet (0.6 meters) is enough to generate shape, and the break handles low, mid, and high tides equally well—though the best texture often coincides with a morning north wind, which cleans up the surface nicely. For beginners, La Bocana shines on smaller days, offering forgiving walls and plenty of room to learn. Adding to its charm, a rivermouth influence can introduce playful variation in wave shape and current, keeping even intermediate surfers on their toes. While it may not be a world-class destination, it's a reliable, low-key option that deserves a session if you're in the area, especially for those honing their craft or seeking a mellow, fun-filled surf.
Best Surf Season & Climatology
Best Surf Season (October - March)
The foundation of La Bocana's surf year rests on the combination of southern-hemisphere groundswell and winter wind patterns. From October through March, the North Pacific high-pressure system strengthens and cold fronts push into the region, bringing more N, NNW, NW and NNE offshore flow to this south-facing beach. At the same time, the S/SSW/S swell window remains active, delivering surf with an average height of 4.6-5.2ft (1.4-1.6m) and periods in the 11-13s range-powerful enough to hold shape on the sand and forgiving enough for all skill levels. November and December stand out with ideal wind conditions 61% and 58% of the time respectively, and October's strong south swells plus 55% clean wind create an excellent ramp-in. With warm water (26-29°C), low rainfall and mild air temperatures, the winter half of the year is La Bocana's most user-friendly surf season.
