Best Surf Season (November - March)
Nine Palms finds its rhythm when the North Pacific storm track pushes the subtropical high south and the trade-wind influence weakens. From November through March, offshore flow from the W, WNW, NW and NNW rules the coast, giving the east-southeast-facing beach clean, groomed surfaces. Average swell heights hover around 2.5-3ft (0.8-0.9m) with wave periods of 12-13.5s, so the waves are not oversized, but they are consistently rideable and punchy. Swell energy arrives predominantly from the S and SSW window, wrapping into the bay and producing fun, groveling-to-solid surf on the better tides. This is the most reliable window for glassy mornings and head-high walls.
Fair Surf Season (April & October)
April and October are transition months with a foot in both worlds. April sees the average wave period peak near 14.1s and swell heights around 3ft (1m), but the wind mix begins to shift toward ESE and SE breezes, pushing the ideal-wind frequency down near 51%. October is the mirror image: 3.5ft (1.1m) swells still roll through, while the offshore W and NW wind signal re-establishes itself at around 53% ideal. Both months offer excellent surface-texture windows, especially early in the morning before the sea breeze kicks in, but consistency dips compared with midwinter.
Low Surf Season (May - September)
From May through September the southern-hemisphere swell machine pumps bigger, longer-period S and SSW swells to Nine Palms, with average heights climbing to 3.5-4ft (1.1-1.2m) and occasional 5-8ft (1.5-2.5m) pulses. However, the wind regime turns hostile: E, ESE, SE and SSE onshore winds dominate, dropping the ideal-wind frequency to just 38-42%. Tropical moisture also builds, particularly from July through September, when precipitation spikes to 2-3.3mm/day and the water temperature climbs above 28°C. Surfers looking for clean, well-ordered waves will need to pick off the early mornings or chase tropical-storm windows; most days are sectiony, soft and wind-affected despite the abundance of open-ocean energy.
