But don’t be fooled by glossy imagery – the reality of surfing here is unforgiving, and conditions are far from a guarantee of perfection. Surf at Zicatela Beach is a serious undertaking. Waves break over a sandy bottom and typically range from 2 to 6 meters (6 to 20 feet), serving up a mix of lefts and rights. This is advanced territory, best left to experienced surfers, especially when sets push well overhead. Optimal swell comes from the south, though west swells can also produce rideable waves. The most favorable wind is from the northeast, cleaning up the faces and helping shape those signature tubes. Tide windows are broad, from low to high, so timing matters less than wave selection – on big days, judgment is everything, as conditions can quickly turn dangerous. A shortboard, bodyboard, or gun is essential gear to handle the power. The atmosphere on the beach is high-energy, with crowds of surfers jostling for position. A strong local presence means keeping a low profile and respecting the lineup is non-negotiable. While the beach itself is easily accessible and surrounded by amenities, paddle-outs are a true grind. Rip currents are fierce, constantly pulling you toward the impact zone, so be prepared to fight for every inch. Best Surf Season (May - September)

The eastern Pacific shifts into overdrive as the South Pacific winter storm track becomes the primary swell engine for Puerto Escondido. From May through September, average swell heights climb into the 5-5.5ft (1.5-1.7m) range with periods consistently in the 13-14 second band. That combination spells long-period, powerful groundswell for the west-southwest-facing beach, and the data shows a dramatic concentration of energy from the SSW and S windows. Add in the increasingly reliable morning offshore flow from the E/ENE/NE quadrants, and you have the recipe for Puerto firing. June through August stand out as the absolute peak: ideal wind percentages reach 42-44 percent, water temps peak near 30.5°C, and the line-up is as consistent as it gets.
