Best Surf Season (March - August)

San Augustin comes to life in March when the South Pacific storm track starts sending repeated long-period groundswells north into the Mexican coastline. The southern quadrant - especially SSE, S, SSW and SW - delivers well over 75% of the wave energy through the spring, and by May the average period is up to 14.1s. July and August add the next layer: the Eastern Pacific hurricane season begins to contribute tropical-born SSW/SW swell while NNW and NW offshore winds become more reliable, producing some of the cleanest, most powerful days of the year.

Fair Surf Season (September - November)

September through November is the transition from the summer south-swell machine to winter. The swell heights stay solid - September even posts the highest average of the year at around 5-6ft (1.7m) - but the tropical cyclone/inconsistent storm pattern makes the quality more weather-dependent. There can be absolute XL days when a hurricane or tropical storm sets up perfectly, but also flat, rainy stretches. Winds remain mostly favorable, especially in November when ideal conditions reach 62%, but the periodic mix of NE/ENE swell is less efficient at this south-facing beach.

Low Surf Season (December - February)

The low season at San Augustin runs from December through February. During these months the wave window shifts toward NE and ENE swells, the average period drops to the 11-12s range, and the SSE-SW quadrant occupies a smaller share of the spectrum. That doesn't mean it goes completely flat - average heights still sit in the 4-5ft (1.4-1.5m) range and offshore N/NNW winds blow a majority of the time. The key is to target the occasional longer-period SSW swell; when that arrives on a light offshore morning, even the winter 'low season' can produce surprisingly clean, fun surf.
