The North Atlantic winter machine is in full swing from October through March, delivering the most consistent and powerful swells to Mullaghmore Head. Average wave heights range from 1.3m to 1.8m, with periods frequently hitting the 10-14s sweet spot and often pushing beyond 12s. The dominant swell directions are W, WNW, and NW, which wrap beautifully into this north-facing reef. Offshore winds from the south, SSW, and SW blow reliably 31-33% of the time, creating clean conditions for the biggest days. Extratropical storms deepen across the Atlantic, and the negative NAO phase often sets up a favorable pressure gradient for these ideal offshore winds. When the combo peaks, expect pumping, firing waves in the 1.5-2.5m range, with occasional XXL swells above 2.5m – the stuff of big wave legends.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

April and September serve as transitional months, offering a mix of fading winter energy and building autumn juice. Average swell heights drop to 1.1m, with periods averaging around 10-11s, still punchy enough for solid rides. Swell direction is dominated by WNW and NW, but the frequency of long-period groundswell is lower than in winter. Offshore wind percentages hover around 29-33%, making for clean sessions on the better days. While the consistency is not as high, these months can deliver fun, rippable waves in the 1-1.5m range, especially when a late-season storm or early-season low brushes past. Expect smaller days with occasional gems.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer at Mullaghmore Head is a quiet affair, with average swell heights bottoming out at 0.8-0.9m and periods dropping to 8-9s – choppy, low, and messy by local standards. The North Atlantic high-pressure system dominates, suppressing storm activity and limiting swell generation. Swell direction remains primarily W and NW, but the waves are generally small, groveling, and lack power. Offshore wind percentages are at their annual low (24-27%), though August sees a slight uptick to 32% due to occasional southerly breezes. The few rideable days occur when a rare summer low pushes some fun-sized (0.5-1m) swell, but overall, this is the season for checking the cams and planning autumn sessions.
