Aramoana delivers a steady, sand-bottom beach break that peels both left and right along the spit, with additional waves picking up toward the rocky midway section. At the north end, the lineup swells in size as it faces colorful volcanic cliffs, giving stronger surfers a more powerful canvas to work with. Consistent and user-friendly, this spot offers reliable rides across a range of conditions.

Best Surf Season (November - February)

Aramoana's NE-facing sand and reef zones respond best to N through ENE swell, and the late spring and summer months statistically deliver the highest proportion of that favourable direction. December stands out with the largest slice of the year's N-ENE swell energy, while January and February remain anchored in the 10-11s period range with average wave heights around 5-6ft (1.7-1.8m). These are the months when the subtropical high pressure belt builds over the Tasman Sea and helps drive pulses of NE swell into the Otago coastline. Combine that with milder air temperatures and water temps of 12-15°C, and Aramoana is at its most user-friendly. It is not immune to summer onshores - NNE and NE breezes still blow a hefty percentage of the time, so the real winners are the days when a south to west-southwest change cleans up the east-facing lineup.
