The Island

Tuamoto Island stands as a world-class reef setup just off Sponge Bay, its raw, uneven underwater contours sculpting waves that demand respect. The primary attraction is The Bowl, a southern reef section that unspools into long, hollow lefts—perfect for carving deep tubes when the swell lines up. On the flip side, Inside Island serves up shorter, punchy rights that pack an intense wallop in a tighter package. This spot thrives on a mix of swell directions, with offshore winds and mid-tide bringing the best out of these treacherous yet thrilling peaks. Best suited for experienced surfers who can handle shallow reef exposure and shifting sections.

Best Surf Season (April - August)

When the Southern Ocean begins to wake from its summertime slumber, The Island's SSE-facing bank switches on. From April through August average wave heights run 6-7ft (1.8-2.1m) with average periods pushing from 10.7 up to a wintertime peak near 11 seconds. The subtropical ridge drifts north, allowing frontal systems and deep Tasman Sea lows to aim long-period S and SSE swell straight at the coast. Onshore wind frequency stays relatively low, and the offshore NW/NNW flow still blows around a third of the time. Water temps drop from 18.5°C to 13.5°C, but the reward is powerful, organized groundswell on a beach that handles southerly energy beautifully.
