Best Surf Season (October - March)

Facing a raw, exposed quadrant of the Norwegian coastline, Storvika looks like it should feel the full force of the North Atlantic. But the statistical reality is humbling: every month of the year comes up with an average swell height of 0.0ft (0.0m), an average period of 0.0s, and 0% ideal surf conditions. This is a coast that lives in the shadow of complex bathymetry and, most likely, a highly sheltered position relative to the deep-water swell-generation zones. That means the phrase 'best season' is relative. From October through March, the Icelandic Low and the seasonal storm track regularly fire across the Norwegian Sea. When a deep low stalls just northwest of Norway, true N, NNW and NW groundswell can arrive with serious period. The wind distribution at the same time is heavily offshore - SE, SSE, S and SSW directions combine for roughly 50-60% of all observations - so the few real swells that do materialise are likely to be clean. Cold is part of the deal, with water temperatures below 5°C and snow flurries in the air. In short, if you are prepared for the Arctic, winter is the closest Storvika gets to a surf season.
