One Palm Point is a rugged, remote reef break that rewards the bold with raw, untamed waves. This left-handers-only setup peels over a shallow live coral platform, demanding expert-level skill and fearless commitment. Swells from the south and southwest light the fuse, with the spot handling 3 to 8 feet of groundswell. Optimal conditions align when mid-to-high tides meet easterly winds, allowing for long, hollow barrels that stretch down the reef. The access is tricky and isolated, which keeps crowds thin and the vibe wild—a true adventure for those willing to earn their waves. Consistency can be hit or miss, but when it's on, the wave quality sits at a solid 7 out of 10, offering some of the longest, most crystalline lefts in the region. Not for the faint of heart: the takeoff is technical, the depths are dangerously shallow, and a split-second error can spell disaster. A wetsuit or booties are recommended for comfort and protection. As the Indian Ocean monsoon trough shifts north, the trade winds relax and One Palm Point enters its prime window. During these months, long-period groundswells from the deep south (SSW to SW) wrap around the point, delivering consistent, powerful waves averaging 1.5 to 1.8m. More importantly, the wind regime becomes dominated by favourable S to WSW offshore breezes, grooming the waves into clean, rippable lines. With ideal wind conditions 48-60% of the time, this is the epicentre of the year for surfers chasing quality, smooth faces and decent size.
Fair Surf Season (November - March)
The fair season coincides with the early and late winter monsoon. Swell heights hold steady around 1.5m with good periods of 12-13 seconds, primarily from the SSW to WSW quadrants. However, the wind blows onshore from the NW to WNW more frequently, limiting clean conditions to roughly 15-42% of the time. When the offshore windows align with the occasional wrap-around swell, the point can fire, but consistency is lacking; you'll need to pick the right days.
Low Surf Season (July - October)
Mid to late summer sees the Indian Ocean roaring with powerful long-period swells, peaking at 2.0-2.1m in August and September. Yet, these months are humbling for One Palm Point. The wind becomes overwhelmingly cross-onshore from the SE to SSE, with ideal offshore conditions dropping to a mere 10-21%. The combination of big, raw swell and choppy, onshore wind makes for challenging, often unsurfable conditions. Only the rare, fleeting window of a southerly shift offers hope.
