Playa Guanico

Playa Guanico's south-facing beach on Panama's Azuero Peninsula is a classic tropical setup: consistent Southern Hemisphere groundswell, warm water, and a wet/dry cycle that dictates everything. The annual progression is driven by the seasonal migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone and the strength of the North Pacific high. When the dry season sets in, the trade winds blow out of the north and northeast, grooming the SSW/SW swell into clean walls. When the ITCZ creeps north, winds swing west and southwest and surf quality becomes a game of finding windows.

Best Surf Season (December - April)

This is the money window. The North Pacific high pressure system strengthens, bringing offshore N/NNE flow and mostly rain-free skies. Average swell heights run 3.6-4.3ft (1.1-1.3m) with periods of 12-14s, and the ideal wind percentage averages 56-74%. SSW/SW groundswell is present throughout, and the glassy conditions make Playa Guanico extremely user-friendly. March and April are the standout months by size and period.
