Best Surf Season (April - August)

Playa Malibu's most reliable surf comes when the Southern Hemisphere winter fires up the South Pacific storm track. From April through August, SSW and SW groundswells dominate the wave rose, with average periods climbing into the 10.9-12.9 second range. The north-northwest trade flow remains strong enough to blow offshore across this south-facing beach, keeping surfaces clean. Ideal wind conditions run between 60 and 77 percent of the time. Expect fun-sized 2-3ft (0.6-0.9m) waves, with occasional bigger pulses when longer-period energy lines up.

Fair Surf Season (September - November)

As the Southern Hemisphere season tapers, Playa Malibu enters a transition window. The SSW swell signal stays remarkably persistent through September and October, but period drops to 10.3-10.7s and the ITCZ becomes a regular player, dragging onshore SW/SSW winds across the beach. September and October see ideal wind drop to 51 and 46 percent respectively. November improves as the trade winds rebuild and the onshore flow weakens, giving more clean, grovel-worthy waves even though the average period shortens to 9.7s.

Low Surf Season (December - March)

The northern hemisphere winter brings strong offshore N/NNW trade winds and dry, sunny weather, but the swell window becomes more mixed. South and southwest groundswell energy is less consistent, and shorter-period NNW/N windswell accounts for a large share of the surf. Average periods fluctuate between 9.0s and 11.9s, while wave heights remain mostly in the small 2-3ft (0.6-0.9m) range. There are still good days-especially when a stray S/SW groundswell coincides with light offshore flow-but overall the consistency drops and it becomes more of a low-season trade wind spot.
