Playa Malibu's most reliable surf comes when the Southern Hemisphere winter fires up the South Pacific storm track. From April through August, SSW and SW groundswells dominate the wave rose, with average periods climbing into the 10.9-12.9 second range. The north-northwest trade flow remains strong enough to blow offshore across this south-facing beach, keeping surfaces clean. Ideal wind conditions run between 60 and 77 percent of the time. Expect fun-sized 2-3ft (0.6-0.9m) waves, with occasional bigger pulses when longer-period energy lines up.
