When a south or southwest swell rolls in with at least two feet of energy, the uneven reef lights up with both left and right rides that can handle size. The wave is best suited for intermediate surfers, as the bottom is unpredictable and the crowd dynamic adds another layer of challenge. Optimum conditions come with a northwest wind—typical of the region’s trade winds—and the break works across a wide tidal range, from low to high, giving you flexibility to score. Expect company, especially on weekends and during peak hours, so scout for quieter windows if you want more open waves. Best Surf Season (May - November)

This is the most consistent window for small, rideable surf at Playa Las Bovedas. The Intertropical Convergence Zone migrates north, the Caribbean trade winds ease, and ideal offshore wind jumps to 13-22% of the time. The swell remains predominantly SSW, with 25-40% of waves falling in the 1.6-3.3ft (0.5-1m) range - groveling-sized but clean. It isn't overhead, but a 1.6ft (0.5m) average with a glassy surface is far better than what the dry season offers.
