Best Surf Season (May - October)

Playa Rio Mar faces southeast, so the waves that work best are the S, SSW, SW and WSW pulses that sneak around the exposed section of coast. From May through October, the swell rose is completely dominated by the SSW quadrant -- often 83 to 98 percent of all incoming swell -- and average periods sit in the 12 to 14 second range, giving the ocean a powerful, organized push even though average heights are a modest 2 to 3 feet (0.6 to 1m). Offshore NNW/NW flow remains frequent enough to keep the faces clean, and water temperatures hover in the 28 to 29°C range. This is the consistency season: small, rippable, fun-sized surf with occasional 3 to 5 foot (1 to 1.5m) pulses when tropical cyclones or strong Southern Hemisphere storms throw energy north toward Panama.
