Draped across the northern edge of Playa Iguanas, Panga Drops offers a lively, less intense alternative to the heavy-hitting Colorado next door. It shares similar offshore bathymetry but is defined by a distinct horseshoe-shaped reef that coaxes both lefts and rights out of proper SW swell. When the energy lines up, Panga doesn't just peel—it barrels. On bigger days, the right can channel the spirit of Sunset Beach, Oahu, with a steep, grinding wall that demands respect. Just keep your head on a swivel: the break sits well offshore, and bull shark sightings have been reported in these waters. This setup handles swell from a trim 5 feet (1.5 meters) all the way up to a meaty 15 feet (4.5 meters), with prime conditions coming from the Southwest. The reef produces a shifting canvas of left and right peaks, welcoming shortboards, longboards, funboards, and fish alike. Best wind is from the Northeast, and the wave works across low, mid, and high tides, offering flexibility for various approaches. Be prepared for a serious paddle—waves detonate far out, but reward the effort with long, drawn-out rides when it’s on. Access is straightforward if you're staying at Iguanas; otherwise, a short boat trip or a hike will get you there. Crowds are generally mellow, made up mostly of traveling surfers, so the vibe stays relaxed. Prime season runs from April through September—spring, summer, and early autumn deliver the most consistent action. Just remember to steer clear after heavy rains when debris can sneak into the lineup.

Best Surf Season (May - October)
These months deliver the peak of the year at Panga Drops. The trade winds relax, opening the door for lighter offshore breezes from the NE and ENE that groom the wave faces to perfection. Simultaneously, the southern hemisphere winter kicks into gear, sending powerful, long-period swell from the S, SSW, and SW straight into this SSW-facing beach. The average wave period consistently sits in the 12-14 second range, delivering powerful, long period waves that stand up nicely over the reef. The result is clean, rippable surf in the fun, solid 1-1.5m range, with occasional pumping 1.5-2m days. This is the window to book your trip.
Fair Surf Season (April & November)
These shoulder months offer a mixed bag. The swell direction shifts, with April seeing the first influx of southern hemi groundswell (SSW and SW) and November clinging to the tail end of it. However, the wind consistency is less reliable. In April, the trades are retreating and the ideal wind percentage climbs to 17%, while in November the trades are strengthening, giving 25% ideal conditions. You'll find good waves on the right days, but be prepared to work around more variable wind and a higher chance of onshore flow. Periods remain in the average to powerful range, providing punchy surf.
Low Surf Season (December - March)
Winter is dominated by the strong, persistent ENE trade winds. While these are offshore at Panga Drops, they blow with serious intensity – often 20-40+ kph – creating bumpy, wind-affected conditions. The ideal wind percentage plummets to 4-9%. Swell is predominantly from the ENE and NE, which is far from optimal for this south-facing spot. Periods drop to the 8-9 second range, producing average, punchy waves at best, but more often choppy and messy conditions. Wave heights hover around 1.3-1.4m, but the lack of quality makes it largely a time to wait for a lull in the trades. Surfable, but far from the spot's potential.
